I have a Chinese calligraphy inkwell with a flat basin. To use, add a little water, then grind an ink stick gently in the water to dissolve the solid ink into the liquid. Take a writing brush and swirl it through the ink to wet it properly. Then press the brush into the conical depression in the corner of the inkwell, and rotate to release excess ink back into the pool.
